Jenny Brandt remembered where Jack McCoy's office was. At least, she remembered where it was seven years ago. Since he had the same position, Jenny assumed he'd kept the same office. Fifth floor. Southern end of the building. If she was wrong, she could always ask someone.

The freight elevator went all the way up. No one else needed to get on. Jenny imagined it couldn't be used too often, so she wasn't surprised.

Jenny made it up to the 7th floor and got off. There was no one in this hallway, but it appeared to be off the main path. Good. She stepped off to get the lay of the land.

Two floors away. McCoy was two floors away.

Part of her wanted to go straight down, by the quickest possible route. She could take out anyone in her path.

No, she forced herself. Stealth and force together had gotten her this far. Stealth and force would get her the last two floors.

Only one way to go, at this point. Unless she wanted to get back on the elevator. There were no convenient vents to crawl through. Die Hard had lied to her.

She knew this much: Looking like you were trying to be inconspicuous was one of the best ways to get noticed. So she had to look like she belonged there. At the end of the short hallway, there was a major hallway running the length of the building. No police, either. Luckily.

Confidently, she walked down the hall. The doors weren’t identical, exactly; but they were all offices.

So she picked one at random and opened it. A woman sat there at a desk. Average height, fairly thin. “Can I help you?” she asked.

Jenny grinned. Perfect.

(...)

Quickly, Jenny stepped forward, locking the door behind her. Before the woman could yell or pull something out of her desk, Jenny had her around the throat. “Yes, you can help me. Answer quietly or I’ll break your neck. Where is Jack McCoy’s office?”

“Fifth floor,” the woman whispered.

“In relation to this office, where is he?”

“A hundred feet or so down the hall.”

“Good. This isn’t so hard, is it?” The woman shook her head. “Thank you.” Jenny looked the woman up and down. She misinterpreted Jenny’s actions and said, “Don’t –” still quietly, so at least she was paying some attention.

“I wouldn’t,” Jenny said. “Finally, what size are you?”

The woman seemed puzzled, but answered anyway. “Thank you," Jenny said. She took the cap off of her head. "Stuff this in your mouth. As far as you can without gagging." She didn't particularly want to kill this woman.

Reluctantly, the woman did so. Jenny took the tape dispenser off the table and removed the tape from it. Then she wrapped it tightly around the woman's head a couple of dozen times.

"Stand up." The woman did so. "Take off your clothes." Her eyes widened. "Not your underthings or stockings. Everything else. Shoes, skirt, jacket, blouse. Move!"

The woman quickly stripped. Jenny did the same. She then used her t-shirt to tie the woman's hands together, wrapping it in several more layers of tape. The feet, she bound using her pants. It wasn't as though she was going to wear them again anyway.

Then she put on the woman's clothes. The blouse and jacket were a bit too big. Not annoyingly so. The shoes and skirt fit nicely. Dumping out the woman's briefcase, she placed the contents of her tote bag inside of it. From the woman's purse, she took lipstick and a compact, which she used to apply the lipstick.

Smiling, she turned to the woman. "How do I look? I know, right? My own mother wouldn't recognize me. Neither will the police, until it's too late. Thanks for your time." She nodded, opened the door, locked it behind her, and stepped into the hallway.

A man walked up to her as she started walking to the staircase. "Was Rachel in there?" he asked, pointing to the office.

Jenny couldn't resist. "Yes she is. But she's kind of wrapped up in things right now. You might want to try again later."

Then she moved on down the hall.
