When the State of Appalachia seceded from the Union, a large force of Federal soldiers invaded and established a chain of fortified camps to control the wooded, mountainous region. Patrols of Federal Sentries then combed the countryside surrounding the camps.
The Appalachia State Militia was desperately short of weapons so they decided to get it all from those Federal Sentries.
Homemade non-fatal 'moonshine grenades' were produced, which when they exploded filled the air with a dense cloud of vapourised moonshine, knocking out the Federal troops.
Once the Sentries were unconscious, the Appalachians would then take all their military equipment and uniforms. However, being frugal folk, the Appalachians also took everything else the Sentries had on the them - bra, panties, hair clips, anything not attached!
As they say in the great state of Appalachia, "waste not want not".
When they regained consciousness, the defeated Sentries faced a cold and embarrassing walk back to the camp.
