The Last Round

The rain beat steadily against the tall windows of Ashcroft State Hospital as Nurse Helen Collins made her final rounds of the evening. The old psychiatric hospital had grown quiet; only the distant echo of footsteps and the occasional rattle of keys disturbed the silence.

Her last stop was Room 17.

Inside sat Evelyn Marsh, a dark-haired patient who had spent months on the ward. During the past week she had been calm, polite, and seemingly resigned to her confinement.

“Good evening, Miss Marsh,” Helen said with a reassuring smile. “You’ve done very well today.”

“Thank you, Nurse Collins,” Evelyn replied softly.

Helen made a note on the patient’s chart before turning toward the door.

There was a sharp click.

She looked back.

Evelyn had quietly turned the key in the lock.

“I’m afraid,” the patient said, “I’ve decided not to stay.”

Before Helen could react, Evelyn sprang forward. The struggle lasted only seconds. The chart slipped from Helen’s hands as everything faded into darkness.

When Helen opened her eyes again, the room was strangely quiet.

She tried to sit up but stopped in confusion.

She was no longer wearing her crisp white nurse’s uniform.

Instead, she found herself dressed in the plain institutional gown issued to every patient on the ward.

Across the room, Evelyn calmly buttoned the last buttons of the nurse’s uniform. She fastened Helen’s name badge, clipped the ward keys to her belt, slipped on the sensible white shoes, and placed the small white cap carefully on her dark hair.

She studied herself in the mirror.

Not perfect.

But close enough.

Picking up the patient chart, Evelyn gave Helen a pleasant smile.

“Thank you for your help, Nurse Collins.”

Then she walked out, locking the door behind her.

The corridor was dimly lit, and the evening shift was winding down. An orderly nodded as Evelyn passed.

“Evening, Nurse Collins.”

She smiled politely and continued toward the staff room.

Inside, the room was deserted.

She found Helen’s locker and opened it.

Hanging neatly inside was a tailored charcoal coat, a matching hat, gloves, and a sensible black handbag. Exactly what she had hoped to find.

She slipped the coat on over the white uniform, adjusted the hat, picked up the handbag, and looked once more in the mirror.

Now she no longer looked like a nurse on duty.

She looked like one going home after a long shift.

Outside, the rain had eased to a mist.

The porter at the main entrance tipped his cap.

“Good night, Nurse Collins.”

“Good night,” Evelyn replied pleasantly.

She stepped through the gates without another glance.

Only minutes later did Helen manage to attract attention.

Orderlies rushed into Room 17 to find an agitated young woman in a patient’s gown insisting she was Nurse Collins.

No one believed her at first.

By the time the truth was uncovered, the woman in the nurse’s coat had disappeared into the city beyond the hospital walls.

Somewhere in the darkness, Evelyn Marsh smiled to herself.

She had learned the oldest lesson in deception:

People seldom see the person.

They see the uniform.
