Sarah smiled to herself, barely noticing her partners' squabbling behind her.
Only the night before, she had chanced upon the Grand Admiral of the Alliance Navy's personal assistant having a drink alone at the very hotel bar in Minsk she had been finishing up her last mission in. A few more drinks later and she was venting her frustrations about her boss, Admiral Amhara Nerna.
"First she had me spend the whole day booking her stay in Valencia," She had been saying. "THEN she suddenly changed plans on me and told me to prepare for a secret meeting here in Minsk and I had to do it all over again. BUT, b-but this time it was all hush-hush. I had to book everything with false names, keep the venue small, but not TOO small. I had to argue with the concierge at this hotel for over two hours! Can you believe it?!"
"No that's totally unfair," Sarah had reached out and put her hand gently over the secretary's, "What was all the hubbub about anyway?"
"Well, WELL" the secretary had leaned in close to Sarah's face, the smell of gin heavy on her breath. Her voice had fallen to a whisper, "The Alliance military is meeting with the Concordat's military for the first time ever. They've been rivals for so long that this can only mean a secret alliance against the Free Cities!"
"You don't say," Sarah's hand had fallen empathetically on the secretary's left knee and had begun slowly tracing figure eights on her stockinged thigh with her finger tip. She had moved in even closer, "They've never met before, you say?"
The secretary had looked down at the hand on her leg but had not attempted to move it. Sarah knew she had her. The secretary had smiled, the booze doing its work, "They've hated and been paranoid about each other for so long that they don't even know what their counterparts look like...it might be a huge disaster and THEN who do you think gets blamed?!"
"Your boss sounds like a nightmare," Sarah's hands had moved slightly further up the secretary's leg, "Sounds like you need a vacation."
Sarah had called for the bill and helped her new friend back to her room. It hadn't taken much coaxing at all for the secretary to let Sarah tie her spread eagle to the bed, each limp strict secured to the bedposts. Only when Sarah had stuffed her mouth and sealed it shut with her special lip-sealant tape had she drunkenly begun to realize her mistake.
"That vacation starts tonight, hun," Sarah had smiled and planted a kiss on the secretary's tape lips, "The maids will find you in the morning. Have a nice rest until then!"
Sarah would have preferred to have spent the night with her new friend but the news that the Alliance and Concordat were meeting could only spell certain doom for her beloved city. She had reported the news to her handler and then called together the three best bondita agents in Minsk, and masked up. They had slipped into the small conference room only a few minutes before it was set to begin. With all the secrecy attached to the meeting, only a handful of Alliance security were about the hotel and only one guard was posted outside the doors. Admiral Nerna and her small staff had been easily, surprised and subdued. The agents had been so efficient that the soldiers were gagged and halfway tied before they even understood what was happening.
Sarah knew they only had moments before the Concordat's delegation was due to arrive, she couldn't help thinking about the secretary, still bound and gagged back in her room, mmpfing and struggling against her bonds. She felt a flutter imaging the shocked maid walking into the room, dropping her duster when she laid her eyes on the secretary spread eagle on the bed.
Maybe if we finish early here, I'll be able to stop in and say goodbye properly, Sarah thought to herself as the door to the conference room began to open....
