In the street outside, Toner’s driver was getting out of the car. ‘Bit of news,’ he said. ‘A young policewoman’s been murdered. Body found in the back of one of those Japanese four-wheel-drive things somewhere in East Belfast. Bloody terrible. She’d been stripped and tied up and gagged and then shot in the back of the head. Her uniform’s missing, too.’
