Inside the large cellar, Monique — who had untied herself with great effort — was signaling to the bound and gagged Sarah to stay quiet.
A patrolling guard was approaching.
Monique quickly hid behind the wall, ready to strike the approaching guard.
She landed a perfect hit. The guard went out cold.
With the guard unconscious on the floor, Monique quickly freed Sarah. She took a brief moment to comfort her devastated friend, but hesitation was a luxury they couldn’t afford.
They had to secure the guard and escape — before it was too late.
“There. That should hold,” Monique said as she finished the final knots on the battered guard. She then turned her attention to Sarah.
“This uniform might confuse the other guards for a moment if we run into them — and give us a chance to strike first. We better pray we only encounter one at a time,” she told Sarah with both doubt and determination.
Sarah was nervous and afraid. She knew this would mean severe punishment if they got caught, but she was also anxious to escape.
