After all chapter 6 is, alongside with Chapter 4, the one I had the most fun working on. Which is logical, since Chapter 6 is based on one of my favorite Desperados III missions – I’m pretty sure anyone who played or watched playthroughs of the game recognized the clear reference to the Casa DeVitt mission.

I'm glad you enjoyed the chapter, meditions.

Being lovebirds “on the wrong side of the uniform stealing” gives Josephine’s and Alice’s scenes a distinct flavor, and ultimately ST and I decided to roll with it and go with the “they’re actually getting turned on by being mugged and bound together”. Probably the least realistic part of Red Rock II, but Josephine, Alice, and Jenny have always been the comic reliefs of the saga, so I think it fits their characters.

The ambush of Mary-Beth’s patrol was indeed a reference to the three-mooks patrols of Desperados III who show up from time to time as obstacles in late missions and side-missions. Personally, it always felt very satisfying to take out three or four guards at the same time.

My favorite scenes were the one with Sofia and her cousins at the beginning, an other classic case of the story being introduced with the viewpoint of a "damsel of the week", and the ones with Alice, Josephine, and Jenny (obviously).

Indeed, the Casa Devitt mission was of my favourite missions too in Desperados III but you could say that our heroines had an easier time of it compared with Cooper and Co. ;)

As rufus and I once said to each other, we're both fans of having lovebirds as the unfortunate ( or in Alice and Josephine's case, fortunate. :D ) victims of uniform stealing and I agree that the light heartedness of the three stoogettes gives Red Rock II that comic relief that balances out the more serious aspects. And fits into their goofy characters that make them so endearing.

I completely agree with the Macer girls being one of my favourites in the chapter and it was a stroke of inspiration when rufus began the chapter from Sofia and her cousins perspectives. It was a great change of pace and after Rufus showed me the drafts we ran with it.

Fun behind the scenes fact; our initial idea was for our heroines to replace three dancing girls but we found it difficult to implement in the story, so enter the Macer girls.

Oh shoot! How could I forget mentioning THAT behind-the-scene. Good call. Yes indeed, for the longest time the first damsels were meant to be a troupe of dancers - the introduction of the three Macer bachelorettes was actually a very late decision. While DeBeers is meant to be a blowhard, ST and I didn't want him (or Victoria) to feel too incompetent either, as it would diminish their threat. The original plan was to have Nancy, Sand, and Sylvié impersonate the dancers and be forced to perform in front of the audience (for a comedic scene). However, it wouldn't have been logical for DeBeers and Victoria to not assist to the dance, and they'd have recognized the heroines.

When it comes to fleshing out the personalities of the "damsels of the moment" to make light-hearted stories more fun, there are two routes I find equally good. Either you make her endearing (either by making her strong-willed or kind or funny or bubbly or sympathetic in some aspects). Cases in point: Sofia and Julia, Michaela, the Three Stoogettes... Though that instance mostly works in lighter (translation: non-lethal) stories as far as I'm concerned. Now you also can have sympathetic victims in darker stories, but then it's not to create a pleasant feeling with the readers. Or you make the damsel annoying, which makes her comeuppance USB-style a bit satisfying in a karmic kind of way. (That's the "Eleanor Route". :P )

"Love and Mugging" - characters being brought together romantically by being mugged or by mugging people or even getting turned on by that - is a favorite trope of mine when it comes to USB. Even when aiming for more realistic atmosphere, I like the idea of featuring a little "fetish-fueld fantasy" from time to time... ;)

Indeed thanks Rufus, it would have made our heroines stand out too much if they had impersonated the dancers and been made to dance, since Nancy and Sand aren't exactly dancers but Sylvié would have been in her element. In our headcanon, Sylvié was raised by dancers and entertainers in Paris' famous Moulin Rouge so she would've had to give her friends crash courses in dancing. So rufus and I decided at the last minute to include the Macer's instead. Looking back, and seeing how well it's turned out, we definitely made the right call.

Since I'm partial to writing more darker stories, I prefer to make my "victims of the moment" like little 'Eleanor’s ', so they are unpleasant spoiled individuals who no-one will miss, which makes their comeuppance all the more entertaining. I also like to have those sympathetic victims too, since not only are their deaths tragic but it highlights the ruthless nature of my lethal protagonists. I think giving victims personalities, whether it's a non-lethal or lethal setting, adds that level of depth and is an essential part of the USB experience.

I share your thoughts on the "Love and Mugging" trope rufus, as its a staple of my long running SI saga ( read: Miranda and Nadja), although I don't see it has as fetish but more that I'm a sucker for a good romance. After all, a bit of romance over stripping other women (or being stripped by other women :P ) adds a bit of seasoning to a story, as I'm sure you would agree.
