1997

Found this very old article from 1997.
Remember this controversy so well. It was on the news, in the papers and on the radio.
https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uncu ... 60806.html

Reservoir Dogs to screen on UK television UNCUT! Back then this was considered a MAJOR BIG DEAL!!!!
There was a misconception at the time the movie had been officially banned.
It was given limited cinema release but it was never actually banned by the BBFC and had been available on VHS for a few years prior to the Channel 4 screening controversy.

Many of us did not have internet at this time and the net was still in a fledgling state. We relied off of terrestrial TV for our entertainment. I remember setting up the VHS to record Reservoir Dogs. Mary Whitehouse naturally disapproved!

1997 was a crazy memorable year .....both in the news and personally.

I "left School" ....never really went much in the first place. Bunked off on all my GCSE exams ...all 3 of them!
Prodigy released "Fat of the Land" album ....bought my first ever gaming console with my own money, Sega Saturn. The Heaven's Gate cult came to it's conclusion. Started a YTS (Youth Training Scheme) where I was literally paid £1 an hour for a 40 hour week job!!! Seemed like a lot at the time!

That's my retrospective thought of the day.

Hi Void

1997! The year that was. I remember watching Watching Reservoir Dogs that year and I was the tender age of 7, yep the BBFC and social services would have had a field day with that.

Your lucky when it came around to my GCSE's I had to sit 10 of them! And passed every single one, the lowest grade being a C in ITC but that was only because IT was at foundation level and seen, like music or drama as a do nothing subject. Well it certainly isn't now.

I think I had a PS1 back in 1997, played Crash Bandicoot until my eyes fell out and got my thumb trapped and fractured in a door at school. Spend 4 weeks out with my whole right arm in a sling and thumb in plaster, the NHS being just as inefficient as it still is now.

My telly blew up and I had to play Ape Escape, which my best mate had borrowed me on an old black and white TV kindly donated by my neighbours who were good people. This was all before I was introduced to Harry Potter in 1999, after missing the first three books. A series that would come to define both my childhood and early teenage life.

Ah fun times, I wish I was 7 again let me tell you.

Classic black and white TVs! I remember when quite a few people still had them. An old friend of mine had one....strange really because his Dad was well known to be very well off.

Remember unit cards for phone boxes?

Yeah, this one was at least circa mid 80s but I was amazed that the thing even accepted the SCART lead of my PS1. Which resulted in me playing perhaps the most colourful game in gaming history...in black and white. Ah, fun times!

Oh yes! In the dark days before mobile phones we had to rely on BT phone boxes and either had to pay 10p, 20p or 50p for the next few minutes. Or if you were really lucky you would have a unit card, although my family never had one luckily we were able to have our own cordless home phones.

I still remember my first 2MB dot matrix mobile phone. I was 11 and my mum brought us Alcatel's from Vigin Store in Nottingham. The thing was a brick compared to today's smart phones but that old phone served me well.

SCART leads...had to run my Saturn through a VHS player and connect the VHS player to the TV in order to play...the TV had no SCART socket. And the Saturn had no RF lead.

I always seem to have bad luck with TVs. Always ends up being a problem! My N64 only played in black and white, even though it was a colour TV.
Just last year I had to replace another TV after the one I had died only after 2 years of owning it.
Maybe I'm spending too cheap!

Damn. SCART leads really where worth their weight in gold, especially when it came to console gaming. Thankfully, things are less hectic with HDMI cables but still we're not truly wireless yet..

Yeah, that's the trouble with modern rubbish. Don't last two years without crapping out on you. I had a 24" inch LG screen that I brought back in 2016 and i was still using for my XB1 and I have only just retired it. But that screen was still working after 8 years, you have to hand to the Koreans they do do build to last.

As the saying goes, you get what you pay for.

8 years is not bad for a TV lifespan.
The one I got September last year is this model https://toshiba-tv.com/uk-uk/43ua3a63db

It's been alright for the most part, though does very occasionally decide to switch off and restart when I am in the middle of a game, of course it would not be complete if there was not some kind of issue it....first world problems!

I see what you meant about the cars in L.A. Noire not lasting long....only a handful of hits and it catches fire!
Not really an issue for the most part except when trying to unlock an achievement that requires you to do $47,000 worth of damage during a case. Spent over an hour doing tons of damage with different cars ....and racked up $42,000 of city damage! Argghh.
Did it for 2 hours in the next case and finally got the achievement! Was fun though.

Finally unlocked free roam mode and now a homicide detective, about to start a case with some kind of lipstick serial killer.

I do like the feature of hitting a button while driving and your partner gives you directions, telling you to turn left or right or straight ahead. Make navigation much easier. Reminds me of doing driving lessons all those years ago!

Cool, a 43" Toshiba. Sorry to hear that you're having trouble with it but I understand what you mean. With my new TV I have to switch it on twice or restart my console because whenever I start it up the first time, it goes all wide-screen with no sound and it takes a minute to warm up. But it's miles better then my old TV that I do miss.

Yep, that's Rockstar for you my friend said GTA had similar issues with paper tissue cars. But it took me a while and numerous trips to the game over screen until I got that achievement. It was good times and very satisfying when I did get despite causing lots of property damage too.

Ah, I will not spoil the surprise but that lipstick killer is connected to a very infamous 1940s LA Homicide that remains unsolved to this day. Free roaming is fun, you always seem to run into a car chase or some Hoods holding up a liquor store. The gunfights in that game were spot on.

I always liked that mechanic too, made the game very realistic. Instead of bringing up your minimap and breaking the immersion, just ask your partner. And no you mention it I did take a few driving lessons but i failed my theory test and didn't take anymore lessons because of the expense. But now I have a job, hopefully that will change.
