Struggle for a new life

Post by micpop2 »

It's nice to see that my works are read, so after some time i return with a new story. I hope I will finish this one. :? I hope you will enjoy the first part. As always all critique is welcome :D

Most people know about the Chernobyl disaster that happened in 1986 and the evacuation of people leaving up to 30 km from the plant. 50 thousand people used to live at Pripyat, now it’s a ghost town. There are no inhabitants only wild animals that reclaimed the area and tourists.
At first there were illegal tours guided by locals, with Geiger counters and whoever could fit in their hatchbacks. The tours were ignored by the Government, after all, poor people were doing what they could to survive. But as the time passed by, more and more tourists would visit the Zone. This caused a much needed cash inflow to the villages surrounding the closed zone and some accidents, some deaths, some people missing. And that was enough for the Ukrainian Government to arrange order. So the cash inflow was taxed, guides were employed by the Government and the tourism was popularized. Now there were buses coming in and out of Pripyat on a daily basis. Everything under strickt supervision and "well organized" (as well as an Eastern-European country can organize...)

But, years earlier someone thought, that a 30 square km area free of people would be a great place to build a prison and sell the cells to the neighboring countries. You see, the radiation in reality isn’t that dangerous as they say and after 15 years the Pripyat area could be inhabited again. But prison would be more profitable, so the city stayed deserted. A spot 12 km from Pripyat was chosen for a construction site and in a great rush, 4 months later a prison was built. Over years many dangerous people were sent there, only to die and to be buried in some nameless pit.

In March of 2020 Olena Kasprovich was sent there. This 19 years old girl was born in the poor village near the Volgograd. Her crime was a murder of a woman who was a wife of a prominent politician. All Olga wanted was money and car to get out of Russia, she had no idea who was her victim. She was caught driving the woman’s car and without any trial sent to the Ukrainian prison as a punishment for her crime. So in a way, she succeeded in escaping Russia.

Radiation wouldn’t kill you but unbeknown to the prison builders it has drastically weakened the bricks that were used to build prison walls. It took Olga 5 months of planning and dull wall drilling with the metal spoon, she stole from the cafeteria, but in the end Olga managed to escape the prison. It was a middle of the night, last days of August. She couldn’t see much, from time to time she could hear howling of a dog. She was walking in the woods until she found a gravel road, which she followed. As the night sky was brightening, after few hours of marching, she saw some building in the distance. This made Olga very happy, she was successful in her escape from prison and now she found a place to lay low and think about the next steps. She picked up the pace and moved towards the buildings.

As she was getting closer to the first residential building, first thing that struck her was the silence. It was even quieter than in her village. This was strange to her and as she approached the building she saw that it was abandoned, the next one too and as she moved to the city center it was clear to her, that the whole city was empty and dead. Suddenly she heard an engine roaring in the distance, she hid in the building of Hotel Polesie and observed. The bus with the tourists was approaching the main circus of Pripyat.

Inside the bus there was guide and 20 tourists
- …and all those were residential buildings where the plant workers lived – was explaining the guide – we are getting close to the center of the City, where the bus will stop and you will have 3 hours to wander around and then we will board the bus and we will go closer to the Reactor IV.
- Finally mate, we thought we won’t get through that checkpoint – said someone with a heavy Australian accent.
- The security was indeed more tight than usual, but we made it, no? – replied the guide as the bus stopped. – Right, enjoy the city and don’t wander to far. We don’t want to be looking for you, now. Do we?

The tourists had shaken their heads and said no and started departing the bus. In the meantime Olga found her way to a hotel room upstairs with windows in 2 corners and had a very good vantage point on the circus. As people were departing the bus an idea hatched in her head. What if she could get on that bus? It had to go to the civilization somewhere. The people downstairs retrieved their backpacks and started forming groups and pairs. No one was traveling solo. And that would make the realization of her plan even harder. Time passed as the tourists wandered around the place. Some entered the hotel straight after leaving the bus others went to different locations. Olga hid in one of the rooms waiting for the opportunity. Finally, after about 2 hours she heard two vices somewhere in the building a woman’s and a man’s. She left her hideout and went looking. They were few hotel rooms down the corridor from her vantage point and they were looking through the rooms

-Babe, that backpack is so damn heavy, what did you pack here? – complained the woman
-Oh, you know, this and that, if it’s too heavy, leave it here and we will take it on our way out – answered the man
Olga did learn some English, so she knew they were talking about the backpack, but she couldn't make more out of the conversation. She saw the woman laying down the backpack and following the man. There was no chance, she could take the two out at the same time, so as the pair disappeared further into the hotel she decided to steal the backpack and return to her hiding spot under the bed. The bag was very heavy, but you could see that it was packed completely full. As Olga hid in her spot she could hear a woman’s scream and muffled conversation and then two people running from the hotel. After that it was calm, but Olga decided to hide some more time. After leaving her spot she peeked out and noted the bus gone and the sunset, first one she saw in 5 months. She decided to go through the backpack. Inside were provisions, blanket, flashlight and 4 liters of water. Eating her dinner she noticed that she hadn’t eaten in almost 2 days now. The blanket helped her to go through the night. As she was lying on the hotel room’s bed she planned what to do next.
In the morning she ate the remaining rations, in the bathroom she found remains of the broken mirror in the reflection she saw that her blond, arm-long hair were covered in dirt, as her face, making her blue eyes standing out. But today she was getting out of this hell.

Another bus was coming in. As it stopped in the middle of the circus people once again departed it, retrieve their stuff and got into groups and pairs. But one woman didn’t. She wandered off into the hotel on her own. As Olga watched it from her vantage point she knew, she had to act quick. After spending there almost 2 days she already learned the hotel layout - the woman would enter through the lobby went upstairs and then one of two available corridors. And this is what happened, the woman enters the hotel, looked behind reception desk and went upstairs, all the time she felt as if she was observed, but that’s crazy, the guide said the place was abandoned for the last 30 years. As she got upstairs she saw two corridors and went into one, unbeknown to her, this was the corridor where Olga was hiding. Every room seemed the same, probably 30 years ago it was quite a luxurious hotel, now there were planks missing in the floor, broken windows, destroyed furniture and as she was about to leave she heard quiet „help”. She stood dead still and focused her hearing, and there it was again „help”. Someone was calling for help.
hello, is anybody out there? - she asked as she identified the direction from where the sound was coming from. Then she heard another, louder „help”. Curiousness took over and the woman moved down the corridor to the last room, as she got closer she saw an opened backpack lying on the floor with it’s content spilled out - I’m coming in - said the woman. As she entered the room the doors shut behind her, she felt pain at the back of her head and everything went dark.

As the woman entered the trap, Olga shut the door and struck her victim on the head with a pipe she had previously found in the bathroom. As the body hit the ground Olga stood still listening if anybody else heard anything. But there was nobody else in the building, other tourists decided to visit different places at first. Olga quickly barricaded the entrance to the room with whatever was left of the furniture and looked at the woman lying on the ground. She was wearing salmon trekking black shoes, khaki trousers, white t-shirt and matching khaki jacket, cap, backpack and binoculars around her neck. Olga went to the bathroom and quickly removed her gray prison jumpsuit and black cheap converse knock-offs. She decided to also remove the white knickers provided by the prison. She used the last remming water she had to wash her face, and freshen up her body and used the jumpsuit as a towel, then she returned to the body and started to undress her - the backpack, cap and binoculars ended up on the bed. The hairband pinned Olga’s hair - her victim had quite long dark brown hair. She retrieved the jacket trying not to cover it with dust, white t-shirt and body toned bra which fitted perfectly on Olga’s 36B breasts. Next were the trekking shoes - which were tightly tied, after loosing the laces and taking them off quickly trousers and body toned panties followed. Olga donned all the clothes and thought that those were a good fit. The whole transformation took about 20 minutes, but that was an easy part. Now she needed to hide the body she took her prison jumpsuit, and the backpack she stole and slayed it on the body, then she used the blanket to cover the body with things like a mummy and once she was done, she knew she had to do it she took the pipe and hit the head a few times making sure that the mummy wouldn’t rise. She dragged the body to her hiding spot and hid it under the bed. If some tourist would come here he wouldn’t see a thing. Olga took down the barricade and slowly opened the door, she still couldn’t hear anything in the hotel. Now she had time to go through the backpack. She found food, some painkillers, water, jacket, sunglasses, which she took to her trousers pocket and a key with a Cottage „Chernobyl Hotel” logo on it. Olga was now ready to leave this place she waited in the building for other tourists to come to the bus and as they started boarding she left the hotel lobby and approached the bus. Just as she thought, no one paid attention to her. She sat in the end of the bus and listened to the guide as he described the Chernobyl disaster, evacuation and the general history of the place.

After leaving the Pripyat the guide said that they would travel one hour to the place, where they were picked up from - Orane village. So soon Olga would be a free person. The checkpoint guards didn't even bother to check the bus, as their watch was almost over and they couldn't wait for the food and some vodka back in the base.

Micpop please consider that part of the region that Olena is trying to cross is currently affected by a low intensity war , and both sides are relying on female military units the place is really dangerous maybe Olena needs a newly acquired proper disguise ;)
