Description of the characters and the settings. Not a story.

Post by rufusluciusivan »

Hello everyone. Since it would be redundant and heavy to copy every character's descriptions in each chapter, I put here a summary so you don't have to search for their descriptions in the stories every time you want to remember what they look like or what is the setting. Most of the informations below are found either in the first or in the second parts of the story. I may add other parts if new characters emerge. This post is not a story.

**************

First, a brief map of the place to help you locate the different places. (Note that the map is not on scale; Olympus and Ares should be bigger and Korê smaller. It's more a quick schema to help visualize which Province is where.)

Protagonists:

Aster Demeter
Age: 31
Eyes: Brown
Hair: Black, they arrive below the shoulders, usually tied or braided
Skin tone: Tanned
Province of birth: Korê
Officially a florist and a model of feminity (as well as a model wife). In reality, a member of a resistance network in the Province of Korê. She's specialized in infiltration, but tries to avoid unnecessary casualties, at least among the low-ranked members of the enemy. Now if she could get her hands on one of their leaders on the other hand...

Aaria Proserpi
Age: 42
Eyes: Brown
Hair: Brown, with a few grey strips, boyish short cut
Skin tone: Black
Province of birth: Korê
Aster's first partner and friend. A woman of a few words, she's always concise and efficient. Her hardened features make her perfect to impersonate soldiers and security guards. She also passed herself for a man on a few occasions.

Klenia Nakash
Age: 27
Eyes: Hazel
Hair: Dark brown, long and usually braided
Skin tone: Tanned
Province of birth: Korê
Described with a curvaceous body and a well-endowed chest.
A former petty thief with a voluptuous figure and an outgoing personality. She takes great pleasure in the "aquiring uniforms" part of any infiltration. She's currently part of Aster's team.

Mikani Noyokaze
Age: 26
Eyes: Brown
Hair: Raven-black, usually tied into a ponytail, shoulder-long.
Skin tone: Pale
Province of birth: Smog
She's a little shorter than the average person.
The newest recruit of Aster's team. Her rather plain physique may fool people, but she's more dangerous than she lets on. She tends to be quiet and reserved, and more professional than some others. She lost her family because of Olympus.

Emery ????
Age: 30
Eyes: Dark brown, almost black
Hair: Coal-black, rather short (down to the shoulders)
Skin tone: Light
Province of birth: Rift
Emery is a special combattant, part of a group of elite field agents trained by the Rebellion. She's one of their best elements, if not the best, and has been trained since she was an old teen. She's also a cold-hearted killer specialized in assassination missions. Very efficient at what she does. A traumatic event in her past turned her into the bitter hate-filled person she's now.

Shayna Iven
Age: 27
Eyes: Blue
Hair: Blond, rather short (down to the shoulders)
Skin tone: Tanned
Province of birth: Naïad
A self-proclaimed master thief hailing from the Province of Naïad. She has a score to settle with the Callianass Cartel, that kidnapped and sold her sister, and she ends up getting roped in one of Aster's missions because of it.

Hana Izani
Age: 24
Eyes: Brown, wears glasses
Hair: Black, tied into a strict bun
Skin tone: Pale
Province of birth: Smog
A student in computer physics of the University of Stormfist. She's meeker and more soft-spoken than her best friend Macha, but almost as unlucky.

Age: 30

Hair: Dark brown, shoulder-long
Skin tone: Tanned
Province of birth: Lakeland
An infiltrator going under an alias and working for Cérès. She's part of a different team than Aster. She's renown for having withstood torture several days after being captured, and still managing to escape police custody.

Zia Werrgeld
Age: 24
Eyes: Blue
Hair: Blond, shoulder-long
Skin tone: Light
Province of birth: Shield
A conscript of the Olympian army. She resents being forced to fight for Olympus, but is smart and knows she has to wait for the good opportunity to desert.

Supporting characters:

These people usually play a supporting role in the story, but not in the uniform stealings.

Dimitri Demeter: Officially Aster's husband and the owner of Demeter & Sillo Associates, an agriculture company. In reality, this is only a cover. They're the co-leaders of their resistance network in the Province of Korê.

Thorn Sillo: Dimitri's right-hand man and associate.

Thalès: A member of Dimitri's resistance network. Specialized in the collect of informations.

Cérès Siclie: The leader of a powerful resistance network in the Province of Lakeland. While her cause is good, she's pragmatic, merciless, cynical, and a true politician at heart. She's Emery's boss.

Hieron Syrac: A high-ranked member of the Rebellion working with Cérès. Often partnered with Emery even though they're polar opposites in terms of personality, as he's as outgoing and affable as she's cold and sullen. He used to be one of Emery's instructors.

Morgan Shark: The leader of the resistance network of the Province of Naïad.

Antagonists introduced in the first series (To Overthrow the Utopia):

Olympus: The main antagonist. The country of Olympus invaded all the neighbouring lands two centuries before the events of the story, creating a new Nation called Utopia. During the last seventy years, the attitude of their regime has been hardening. Liberties have been suppressed. Those who speak against Olympus are arrested or killed. Entire villages are slaughtered for the actions of a few rebels.
The conquered countries now under Olympian rule are called "Provinces". They are: Ares, Hera, Okéanis, Smog, Naïad, Korê, Lakeland, Shield, Kachikuni, Karst, Rift and Artemise. You'll find hidden resistance networks fighting against the Government in most of them.

Ares, Hera and Okéanis: The three Provinces that are the most loyal to Olympus, in exchange of favors and a better treatment than the other Provinces. Most of the people from these Provinces are supporters of Olympus.
The typical physical features of their inhabitants are:
- Ares: black or red hair, brown (more rarely blue) eyes
- Hera: blond hair, blue eyes, light skin
- Okéanis: brown hair, blue or green eyes, tanned skin

Arcadius Zeno: The Flamen of Olympus, the head of the government. He's technically the chief enemy of the Rebellion, but since he's also an aging politician in his sixties, he's rarely confronted directly.

Zoë Eudokia (of the Belisaire Faction)
Age: 27
Eyes: Blue grey
Hair: Copper-red, midback-long, one strand is dyed white
Skin tone: Light
Province of birth: Olympus
The youngest child of the Eudokia family. After her father is assassinated, she attempts to avenge him.

The criminal world:

The Callianass Cartel: Utopia's most powerful criminal organization, mostly active in the Province of Naïad. It also has some influence in the neighboring Provinces (Okéanis, Hera and Shield). They have a hand in all illegal traffics, but their two biggest sources of income are the drug traffic and the human traffic.

Calypso Callianass
Age: 40
Eyes: Blue
Hair: Blond, short (down to the neck)
Skin tone: Tanned
Province of birth: Naïad
The cold leader of the Callianass Cartel. She started her life in abject poverty and managed to crawl all her way back to the top of Naïad's underbelly.

Sao IronHills
Age: Mid-thirties
Eyes: Blue
Hair: Black, closely cropped
Skin tone: Light
Province of birth: Ares
Tall and muscular.
Calypso's bodyguard and lover. She's merciless at her job and shows coldness towards everyone but her lover and her closest friends.

Reka BlackHills
Age: Mid-thirties
Eyes: Blue
Hair: Black, braided
Skin tone: Light
Province of birth: Ares
With her tall muscular statuesque figure, Reka is the epitome of Ares' beauty standards. She's Sao's number two and friend, and Max's bodyguard. She's more outgoing than her boss, but just as merciless.

Maximilian Shroud (usually called Max or Maxie for short): Calypso's personal accountant. While not the best with social interactions and often lost in strange trains of thoughts, this little man works the numbers like no one else. He has informants everywhere.

Sao's and Reka's team of mercenaries:
A team assembled by Sao and Reka to fight off the Rebellion's infiltrators. The main members are:

- Amara Adamaï (of the Basileus Faction)
Age: Mid-thirties

- Lucina Krom
Age: Early thirties
Eyes: Brown
Hair: Bluish black, midback-long.
Skin tone: Light
Province of birth: Ares
Born in a village of the Province of Ares, she volunteered to join the Olympian army as soon as she was old enough because of family pressures. During her time in the army, she partnered up with Selena. She's an extraverted attention-seeker.

- Selena Fitch
Age: Early thirties
Eyes: Hazel
Hair: Red, midback-long twin-tails
Skin tone: Light
Province of birth: Shield
Born in the countryside of the Province of Shield, she was orphaned at a young age and raised in state-funded orphanage. She was conscripted in the Army as soon as she was old enough. During her time in the army, she partnered up with Lucina. She's as quiet and reserved as her companion is extraverted.

- Coral Reeve
Age: Mid-thirties
Eyes: Green
Hair: Brown, shoulder-long
Skin tone: Tanned
Province of birth: Okéanis
Born in a poor family of South Window, she volunteered to join the Olympian army with her two best friends to win money and help provide for her family. She lost her friends during a shoot-out with rebels and jumps at the opportunity to have some revenge by joining Sao's team.

A volunteer soldier of the Olympian army later recruited by Sao and Reka.

- Kjelle Sully
Age: Mid-thirties
Eyes: Brown
Hair: Black, chin-long bob cut
Skin tone: Light
Province of birth: Ares
Tall and muscular. Just like many eldest children in Ares, she volunteered to join the army. However, her short temper and eagerness to solve disputes with other soldiers by using violence made her a poor soldier. However, the same aggressiveness caught the eyes of Sao who gave her a spot in her team.

- Karin Ange
Age: Mid-thirties
Eyes: Piercing blue
Hair: Blond, short
Skin tone: Light
Province of birth: Hera
Born from a mother from Hera and a father from Ares, she inherited her mother's eyes and hair colours, but not her flawless curvy body. Unable to fit in her home Province of Hera, she joined the army, and later Sao's and Reka's team.

- Katarina: A member of the team.

- Flavia and Theodora: Members of the team and expert torturers.

Settings and mentioned historical events or characters:

Rift: The northwest Province of Utopia. Contrary to most of the country, its climate is rather inhospitable: cold and dry, under the shadow of tall mountains.

The Fall: A thousand years ago, a huge war destroyed all the nations of the old world order. By the point of the story, the people has managed to recreate modern nations with a technological level similar to ours, but a some parts of the continents have been completely altered by the advanced weapons used, that turned them into deserts or toxic swamps.

The Twelve Factions: The inhabitants of Olympus are distributed between twelve Factions. Originally, these were the twelve extended tribes/small kingdoms that unified themselves to create Olympus, and their respective names come from the ruling families of these small kingdoms. Nowadays, it's more akin to an administrative division, but it's still an important part of their identity; to the point that they still use their Faction name along with the first and family names during formal presentations, and they dye a few strands of their hair with the colour of their Faction. To become an Olympian citizen, one has to be part of or to integrate a Faction. The Twelve factions (with their corresponding colours) are: Basileus (red), Zeno (blue), Belisaire (white), Lycurgue (black), Seleucos (green), Phocas (beige), Héraclius (grey), Tzymiskes (mauve), Cleon (brown), Barca (purple), Sophocle (yellow) and Pindare (orange).

Constantin Basileus and the Rise of Olympus: Constantin Basileus is the founding father of the country of Olympus. He was a warlord, a great strategist and a charismatic leader, and the head of the Basileus Faction.
274 years before the events of the story, he unified the Twelve Factions to create a unified principalty. Then, he launched a huge military campaign to annex all the neighboring countries in order to create a unified peaceful empire. Even to this day, he's a controversial figure: Olympians and their partisans highlight his idealistic dream of creating a peaceful empire devoid of war and his military prowess; the enemies of Olympus point out that he was a warmonger at the origin of a costly war of conquest and aggression. The truth is, of course, somewhere in the middle.

Olympus' campaign: Called the 'Glorious Campaign' in Olympus' history books. It took roughly a century to Constantin Basileus, then his son, and then his grandson to conquer all the livable lands of their part of the world and unify them in a single nation. The nation of Utopia was born 174 years before the events of the story. Even to this day, this military event still influences the people's mentalities. The Provinces that resisted the conquest the most (Rift, Korê, Naïad) are still the most unruly and the ones where the Rebels are numerous; while the ones that were conquered and assimilated first (Ares, Hera) or surrendered peacefully (Okéanis) are the most loyal ones.

The hardening of the political regime: Believe it or not, but at first, Olympus' rule was somewhat tolerable. Constantin's descendants were ruling the country while holding a power similar to a king or an emperor. The eldest child was ruling the country, and the crown was hereditary. Provinces were allowed some degree of autonomy and Olympus didn't try to impose its culture, allowing the Provincials to keep most of their local customs. Political dissidents or opposants were still severely punished and any armed rebellion demanding freedom or independence was mercilessly crushed though.
70 years before the events of the story, the leaders of the eleven other Factions conspired with some members of the Basileus family to seize the power from their ruler Constantin IV. They overthrew him and created a Government where the power would be held collegially by the more powerful Olympian citizens of the Twelve Faction. Unfortunately, they also decided to secure their power by revoking Provincial autonomy and hardening the repression. They tried to suppress the local cultures, forcefully relocated people, established mass conscription, hardened the repression of the police and the army, chose to use weapons forbidden by the laws of warfare to suppress uprisings, etc. However, this had the side effect of driving more and more people to oppose Olympus. After seventy years of harsh repression, the resistance networks have grown powerful and have gathered a lot of sympathizers. The country is on the verge of a full-scale civil war, even though Olympus still pretends that there's no problem in Utopia.

Special combattants: Infiltrators and assassins trained by the Rebellion.

The Holy Kingdom of Okéanis: Before its annexation by Olympus, Okéanis used to be an independant kingdom controlling the lands that correspond to the Provinces of Okéanis and Artemise. Its last king, Eleo IX, chose to willingly integrate Olympus; and in exchange the Province of Okéanis was allowed to keep all its former territories save for the island of Artemise.

Matilda Myrmidia: A warrior priestess of the Holy Kingdom of Okéanis. She lived roughly 500 years before the events of the story. Matilda is the most important historical figure in Okéanis, with a status similar to Constantin Basileus' in Olympus. She took command of the army at a time when the kingdom was weakened and attacked by its neighbours. Her natural charisma allowed her to gather a huge army of volunteers, including a lot of women, to support the regular army. Thanks to several strategic victories, she repelled the raids of the southern Ares Tribes and several legions and fleets of the Principalty of Naïad. Her one failure happened at a place now called Matilda's Bane, where her attempt to invade Naïad was stopped. At the end of her life, thanks to her, the Holy Kingdom of Okéanis had become powerful once again, the leading power in the area. While she's a national heroine in Okéanis, in Naïad they deride her as a bloodthirsty narrow-minded fanatic. The truth is, of course, to be found somewhere in the middle.

Warning! From that point onwards, beware of spoilers for the end of To Overthrow the Utopia Part 5!

**************

Summary of the end of the first half of the story:

In Part 5 of To Overthrow the Utopia, the Rebellion finally stirs up a mass-uprising against Olympus and manages to overthrow the tyrannical government after a costly civil war. Okéanis and Artemise take advantage of the situation to proclaim their independence. The fall of the Government of Olympus is followed by the birth of two nations: first the Utopian Federation (usually simply called the Federation) which consists of all the former Provinces ruled by Olympus except Okéanis and Artemise; second the Free Nation of Okéanis, composed of Okéanis and Artemise.

Sadly, some people gave their lives in order to overthrow the tyrannical government. Dimitri was killed during an army raid, 'Kora' was shot during the last mission, and Aaria sacrificed herself to allow her friends to escape the police during the same mission.
The remaining members of Aster's team (Aster, Klenia, Mikani, and Shayna), while they were hailed as war heroines for their actions, chose to distance themselves from the new government and their politics. They simply wanted to live their lives. Aster opened an other flower shop, with Mikani staying for the moment at her place.
Klenia and Shayna, who started a relationship during the course of the civil war, are now looking for a way to find and rescue Shayna's sister.
After having been roped into the Rebellion's operations more or less against their will, Macha and Hana are now safe and sound, living in Macha's village in the Province of Ares.
Zia, a conscript captured shortly before the mass uprising and who switched sides, also built a friendship with Aster's team, but chose to return to her family after the end of the civil war.
Cérès, Hieron, Morgan, and Thalès are part of the new government ruling over the Federation.
Emery, the last special combattant of her year still alive, became an instructor tasked with training the next generation of special combattants. She was wounded at the leg during the last mission. She witnessed her fallen comrades being denied of any honour due to fear of bad PR, and grew more bitter and hate-filled than ever.

Calypso was executed during the first day of the mass-uprising on Cérès' orders and Sao was killed by Emery in a fight when she tried to stop Aster's last mission. Reka, Max and most of the rest of the mercenary team managed to escape, and are now looking to avenge Sao and Calypso.

maybe it's all in my imagination, but the more I look at the Map of the Provinces the more I see the United States, with Naiad instead of Florida, a newly emerged Desert where it was the North Atlantic etc :)

I see this even in other details, like the Human races, people and nationalities, with 'tanned' or assumably Native Peoples placed in the Western Provinces and Nordic peoples in the Eastern Provinces, which suggests the idea of a colonization that moves from east toward west -

Wow! You make me blush. I don't even really know what to say... Except thank you of course ;) , and that it looks nice! While I enjoy drawing maps, I don't have the patience/talent to polish them up like you did... Perhaps I should have drawn Okéanis a little bigger. With you clean version, I realize that it came up smaller than I intended. If I had one nitpick, I think the town of East Harbour is missing. Other than that, it's perfect. How long did it take you to draw it?

I can assure you that the resemblance with the United States is purely accidental. (Though now that you mention it, it's clear that subconsciously I've been inspired by them... Eery...) The world where the story takes place is constructed, I didn't imagine it to be our world in the far distant future... If you're interested, I'll try to motivate myself to draw the entire continent where Utopia is situated (that would also show where Frontier is). It'll give a better idea of what the country looks like with its surroundings.

In-universe, the diversity comes from the fact that this is a world that experienced a disastrous global war a little more than a thousand years ago that completely destroyed all its nations due to the advanced weapons used, and sent them back in antique/medieval-times technology-wise. During the time of the story, they had managed to regain a technological level similar to ours. Before this catastrophe, the nation that used to be at Utopia's emplacement was very diverse, with a lot of ethnicities, and their far descendants still live here, hence why there is such a big diversity of physiques.

I'll try to have it done in the following days. (I have quite a lot of work this week, so it may take some time.)

I also note, reading the original post, that a lot of new characters have been introduced since you started writing. Will you be adding to the list? (You don't need to, I'm just wondering. I'm not sure I'd be able to add up all the different characters in my stories, so I understand it could be difficult. ;) )

That's a good idea. ;) I'll try to do it, though this week will probably be very busy because of my work. I'll try to write it (as well as read the latest updates of your and trackmann's stories) as soon as I can.

Thank you for putting this up, it is pretty cool to read about all the main characters this way. It's kind of like you've invented your own Wikipedia page. Very nice. :D

Quick update: I added the map and updated the character descriptions as requested. I tried to be as exhaustive as possible.

(Also thanks Trackman, I wish I updated this page sooner to allow you to have immediately the updated informations... ;) )

Wow, that's an impressive lineup. I didn't even realize how many characters there were. (I think there were even some that weren't included here - RIP Kora.)

I expect I'll be revisiting the page from time to time in case I forget any characters/details; it should prove very helpful.

Also, I just caught the joke - "Coral Reeve" - and I approve. ;)
